Firefly Logic Sponsors the Geek Social

Local software development firm Firefly Logic is proud to sponsor the Geek Social, a monthly, no-agenda meeting of the minds of local talent—a chance to hang out with the other geeks in the community and see what's going on.

NashMash Stirs Up Nashville Twitterverse

Today, many of us noticed a large influx of new followers to our Twitter accounts and wondered about the sudden increase in activity. According to an article posted on Fishwreck:

Late yesterday, local Nashville developer 365 Creative released a new Twitter mash-up that quickly generated strong reactions among Nashville users of the Twitter service. Dubbed NashMash, the service allows a Twitter user to follow all the users located in Nashville in one step.

The service has since been turned off "for now" by the developers, but we're curious about your experience and reaction to today's events. How has this service impacted you today? Did you submit your Twitter credentials to follow Nashville? Do you have any thoughts or suggestions for future updates to NashMash?

Geeks to Gather at BarCamp Nashville This Weekend

The Nashville tech/geek community will gather this Saturday at the Sommet Center for the second annual BarCamp Nashville. Building on last year's success, this year's event broadens the opportunities for participation with four simultaneous presentation rooms, an expo hall to meet sponsors and grab refreshments, a cafe for "birds of a feather" meet-ups, and a bar for, you know, acquiring social lubricant.

And to further the networking opportunities, there will be After BarCamp Events, including a downtown pub crawl and discounted tickets for the Predators hockey game.

If you have an interest in new media, social networking, web applications, online marketing or anything kinda techie in Nashville, then you should be at BarCamp this weekend. Registration is free. Anyone can sign up to speak. And you can check out some of the topics on the website.

Geek Breakfast Goes Global

Malnourished geeks everywhere can now look forward to starting the day with a social meal. While it may not qualify as a "movement" per se, Dave has recently launched geekbreakfast.org and opened Geek Breakfast as a model for other communities to adopt. Be sure to check out the 3 Rules of Geek Breakfast (anyone else reminded of Fight Club?).

The next Nashville Geek Breakfast has been scheduled for Thursday, August 28, and returns to the midtown Noshville. Note that scheduling has moved from Facebook to EventBrite, where no account is required to RSVP. See you at breakfast!

Geek Breakfast Moves to Fido for July 31

Late breaking news from Dave: "Noshville will be closed on July 31 for some kitchen renovations. The July breakfast has been moved to Fido on 21st. Please order your breakfast and coffee at the counter, and join us in the back room. I recommend parking behind Bosco's or Fido. The breakfast will return to Noshville in August."

Geek Night at Nashville Rollergirls

If you haven't attended a Nashville Rollergirls game, you have got to see this. Three 20-minute periods of campy, punked-out, raucous entertainment among serious, full-bore competition. And PBR. And the Wheel of Punishment.

Leave the computer for a bit and join us this Saturday at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds Sports Arena for an intra-league game between the X-Pistols and the Assault Rivals. Doors open at 6:00 pm, the game starts at 7:00 and the house will be packed. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door.

Digital Nashville Launches Website and Social Network

Digital Nashville, a networking group for professionals working in or interested in Digital Media in Nashville, has launched a new website to help bring the group from concept to reality. The new site, hosted on Ning, centers around a virtual social network and features event postings, discussion forums and a job board.

Digital Nashville welcomes all members of Nashville's professional digital media community to participate and contribute. They're actively recruiting new members and looking for suggestions, ideas and, most importantly, volunteers to help build out the organization.

Nashville Geeks is the umbrella group for tech and new media geeks in Nashville, Tenn. It's not, however, a group that conducts activities so much as a common name for our loosely affiliated social network.

As such, we're a group on Facebook, a presence on Twitter, and a tag on Flickr. We're the people who gather at Nashville Geek Breakfast, the people who plan and/or attend BarCamp Nashville and PodCamp Nashville, the people who write and comment madly at Nashville is Talking and Music City Bloggers, and the kind of people who have Geek Tweet-ups. More or less, we're also the Dave Delaney fan club.
